Have you ever wondered what most Americans are eating when they go out? Places like Olive Garden, The Outback, and PF Changs are all too familiar to us. These places, and others like them, are the typical destination for Americans going out for dinner. In our minds, they are providing convenience, value, and quality; they seem like great options.
When we look a bit further into them, things become a bit more clear. These meals are packed full of sodium, saturated fat, trans fat, sugar, and ultimately, calories. More often than not, the nutrition facts aren’t listed on the menu. However, just a small amount of searching on the internet turns up the nutritional information of all these chains. This is NOT something they expect the average customer to do.
Sometimes we tell ourselves “Okay, it doesn’t matter where I eat. I’m going to eat that salad and stay healthy”. Unfortunately at these major chains, not even the salad is safe. You see, these restaurants are in the business of making money. In the restaurant game, you make money by serving foods that people want to eat more of. For this reason, large amounts of butter, lard, salt, and sugar are used. Sure these things make their foods taste savory, but they come at a heavy cost. Take a look at the following three meals and take a guess at what they could be:
- 1462 calories, 72 grams of fat, 1308 mg of sodium
- 1,145 calories, 71 grams of fat, 1509 mg of sodium
- 675 calories, 30 grams of fat, 1120 mg of sodium
The first is a the Thai Crunch Salad from California Pizza Kitchen. The second is a Turkey Portobello Burger from Ruby Tuesday. The last is grilled barramundi, New Orleans style, from Red Lobster. Think about this for a minute. Salad, turkey burgers, and fish are something we associate with healthy eating right? Restaurants know this, and they use this to their advantage. The salad alone has almost a day’s worth of calories for the average woman, over a day’s worth of fat, and an absurd amount of blood pressure raising sodium. The barramundi at Red Lobster has almost 700 calories and 30 grams of fat. Barramundi bought at the store and grilled the same way at home has 195 calories and 7.5 grams of fat. Red lobster has added 20+ grams of fat and almost 500 calories to this otherwise healthy meal. This probably comes in the form of butter, lard, and/or other artery clogging oils.
