Most of you have probably noticed people who appear to be able to eat whatever they want and not gain weight, while others kill themselves in the gym only to gain a few pounds of muscle. The reason behind this is prodominately genetics. There are three different body types…ectomorph, mesomorph, and endomorph. Educating yourself about these three will put you in a better position to know your own body and how to change it for the positive.
Ectomorph - These people happen to be blessed with a very fast metabolism, thereby giving them their naturally skinny appearance. This person has typically been very skinny the majority of their life. Their diet and workout routine plays little part in their body retaining very little body fat. They are the one’s who can eat a tub of ice cream a night and not gain weight. Many people are jealous of this body type, but it’s really not all it’s cracked up to be. These individuals have to really push themselves extremely hard in the gym to gain any muscle mass. Once muscle mass is gained, an ectomorph has to eat HUGE amounts of food to keep the weight on. It is always a constant battle for an ectomorph to keep the hard fought gains in the gym.
Endomorph - These individuals have the naturally fat body type. Unfortunately for endomorphs, they can consume just a fraction of what an ectomorphs consume and still gain weight. People often refer to endomorphs as “big boned” and have a round body shape. Their metabolism moves at a snails pace, which is fantastic for gaining and keeping muscle, but terrible for fat loss. Dead opposite of the ectomorph.
Mesomorph - This is the most ideal body type of the three. This is the prototypical athlete or bodybuilder. As we have seen above, the endomorph and ectomorph both have their strengths and weaknesses; the mesomorph takes the positive qualities from both. Mesomorphs have the ability to put on muscle like an endomorph but are blessed with the fat burning metabolism of an ectomorph.
The moral of all this is that you shouldn’t be jealous or bitter of other body types. Learn and really understand your own, and you will be able to better attack your goals. While it may be harder to accomplish your goals, no body type makes it IMPOSSIBLE to accomplish your goals. Don’t use your body type as an excuse for not being able to get to where you want to be….use it as motivation to get you working harder in the gym. It’s impossible to change your genetics, but it’s not impossible to change your work ethic. The sole reason you don’t look the way you want to look is because of you and you alone. Don’t let that discourage you though, there’s always time to start over with a clean slate and achieve the goals that are most important to you.
