Unhealthy Health Products

Posted on May 3, 2010 by Matt Posted in Fitness Products, General Health, Nutrition 3 Comments

vitamin water

With the light airy colors, a well-funded marketing campaign, and healthy spokespersons, many people think vitamin waters are healthy.  What could be better than quenching your thirst and getting a healthy dose of vitamins at the same time?  Sure, there are some vitamins in these products but are they even necessary?  The average American is already getting a surplus of these vitamins without drinking this product.  Any added vitamins found in this product are most likely going to end up in the toilet when you urinate.  The body simply doesn’t have a need for this excess.  Combine that with the multiple lawsuits these companies are facing, and it should at the very least make you skeptical of their claims.

However, the real reason these products are so bad for us is black and white.  A simple look at the nutrition label can be a bit startling.  One bottle of vitamin water (as pictured above) contains 125 calories and 33 grams of sugar.  Let’s think about this for a minute.  A can of Coke contains 110 calories and 30 grams of sugar.  Would you really be running to slam an icy cold can of Coke when you left the gym?  Of course not.  So why would you run to replenish yourself with this stuff?  Don’t let these “healthy” products trick you.  Vitamin water is nothing more than over hyped sugar-water that is making you fat.  Stick to good old-fashioned water before, during, and after exercise.

What are your thoughts about Vitamin Water Zero?!

  • http://shareitfitness.wordpress.com shareitfitness

Ya know…I guess from a health standpoint, it’s not bad. From a taste standpoint, yuck! The stuff tastes like diet water. Personally I’d rather stick to straight water and save my money. This stuff seems like overpriced, well-marketed diet water! But if that’s your thing, I don’t think it will be a detriment to your health!

This is not an accurate comparison. The calories of a 20 oz coke equal 240 with 65 grams of sugar. More than double your comparison. So a vitamin water, although not the healthiest choice out there, is certainly a better choice than most sodas by a long shot.
